ir Torachta Tunníde (Man came and possessed) is one of the four poems accredited to Amergin, chief poet of the Milesians upon their taking of Ireland. This is our new English translation of the version from the Book of Leinster (Lebar na Núachongbála).
"Fir torachta tunníde
dar noí tonna móra monhglassa
ní ragaid mani deib cumachtachaib
arlidir crib coternam
tunide tíre tarrechmar
macharaid domtha cert.
mani charaid na damaid
ní me asbeir frib."

Translation
"Man came and possessed
over nine green-shouldered waves of the sea.
It was not trickery.
I counsel swift recovery.
We possess the land of the fearful sea.
We love it for its beauty.
We would not love it if it were not.
I do not speak against (it)."
