Pronouncing Old and Middle Irish
by Michael Ragan
© 2000

This guide is provided for the beginning student of the Old language. In the tables that follow, we have tried to represent the sounds of Old and Middle Irish letters and letter combinations with American-English examples. While it is impossible to exactly duplicate all Irish sounds, we offer what we hope will give the beginning student at least some understanding of the beautiful sounds of the old language. For any who might wish to study further, see our appended bibliography. Note that in all cases, the order of letters is in the Irish fashion. Where appropriate, I.P.A. symbols are included for those interested.
